Veteran Monuments Restoration

The Veteran Monuments Restoration program was started in 2021. The effort is dedicated to reaffirming our commitment to remembering the sacrifices of the men and women who have served our country by ensuring that the monuments erected to their service are not forgotten.

Initial Program Effort

The initial efforts of Waconia American Legion Post 150 involved the full restoration of the Civil War Soldiers Monument, the Civil War Cannon, and the World War I Veterans Monument located in Waconia City Square Park. The restoration of these three monuments was launched in early 2021 with an objective to fully restore one of the monuments each year, over a period of three years. The original estimate for achieving project objectives was approximately $200,000 but the final cost was ultimately $221,000.

The restoration of the World War I monument was completed in May of 2022 and the Civil War Cannon was finalized in May of 2023. Both of these monuments were rededicated during Memorial Day Services in 2023. The Civil War Soldiers Monument was completed and successfully reinstalled in City Square Park in November of 2023. That monument was then rededicated during Veterans Day Services in November of 2023. This meant that the project completed approximately 6 months earlier than originally planned!

Ongoing Stewardship

As stewards of veteran monuments in Waconia, American Legion Post 150 understands that restorations projects of this nature are only made possible thru the outpouring of support and generous donations from across our community. American Legions, VFWs, Lions Clubs, Fire Departments, Rotary Clubs, Chambers of Commerce, Businesses, Community Service Organizations, the City of Waconia, and Individuals from across Carver County, the state, and the country contribute to the success of our efforts. Grants from both the County and the Minnesota Historical society also play a role. However, our success is also made possible by the tireless efforts of those who volunteer their time and talents to the program.

Our ongoing objective is to ensure that the history the veteran monuments in Waconia and across Carver County endure for generations to come. Consider making a donation today to support this effort!
