Quilts Of Honor
Quilts of Honor is a non-profit organization founded in April of 2010. Their mission is “to bestow a universal symbol and token of thanks, solace, and remembrance to those who serve in harm’s way to protect and defend our lives and freedoms.” The organization is comprised solely of volunteers who cut fabric and assemble patchwork quilt kits, sew the patchwork quilts, and then finish them by sewing a binding into the quilt. Each numbered quilt is labeled with the 3 people who are responsible for creating the quilt, the name of the Veteran receiving the quilt, their military Branch, the Era of their service, and the date & location for awarding of the quilt.
Quilts of Honor Chapters are currently located in 12 states. Minnesota is fortunate enough to host one of those chapters in Brainerd. It is the Brainerd Chapter that has provided the quilts for our ceremony today, and it is their 100 volunteers who have worked tirelessly on the different aspects of each quilt that will be presented to our local Veterans today.
As part of the Veterans Day Services and throughout the year, the Waconia American Legion Auxiliary Unit 150 is privileged to present a Quilt of Honor to Veterans across our community.
